Suspect Shot Dead by Secret Service

WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump was injured in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally yesterday in Butler, Pennsylvania. The Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot at Trump.

The FBI said it is treating the incident as an assassination attempt on Trump and it is an active and ongoing investigation. The suspect was shot dead at the scene by Secret Service agents.

The shots rang out at 6:10 p.m. EST on Saturday, July 13, 2024, as Trump was giving a speech to a crowd of supporters.

The FBI has named the man who shot at Trump as James Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old resident of Belleville, Illinois.

Hodgkinson was a volunteer for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign in 2016 and had a history of posting anti-Trump messages on social media.
