Hollywood Men Still Dominate Speaking Roles

Study Shows Gender Imbalance in Film Industry

Only 11 of 2022's Top 100 Films Were Gender-Balanced or Featured Girls or Women in 45-54.9% of Speaking Roles

Despite efforts to promote gender equality in the film industry, a new study has revealed that Hollywood films continue to be dominated by male characters.

According to the study, which was released on Monday, there are more than twice as many male characters as female characters in speaking roles in the top 100 films of 2022. Only 11 of these films had a gender-balanced cast, meaning that girls or women made up 45-54.9% of speaking roles. In contrast, 30% of speaking characters were female in 2018.

The gender imbalance was particularly pronounced in films that were aimed at a wider audience. Only 15 of the top 100 films featured a cast that was gender-balanced or featured girls or women in more than half of the speaking roles. Additionally, more male than female characters in speaking roles were shown at their place of work actually doing their jobs.

The study's findings highlight the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality in the film industry. By increasing the representation of female characters in speaking roles, Hollywood can help to create a more inclusive and representative world of cinema.
