The idea for the statue was conceived in the early 20th century as a symbol of Brazil's gratitude for overcoming a political crisis. Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1931, with the statue being consecrated on October 12th, 1931.

The statue, designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski, is a marvel of engineering. Its reinforced concrete structure was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and stands 130 feet tall with a wingspan of 92 feet. The outer layer, made of soapstone from Minas Gerais, gives the statue its distinctive white exterior.

The Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, located at its base, hosts Masses, baptisms, and other religious ceremonies.
